How sad that our society has lost the right to privacy. While I don't condone the old days of vigilanties or the current street gangs, it is easy to see how people can be pushed to drastic measures. Is it too much to ask to respect the rights of PRIVATE property?

For those of you, like Jess, who couldn't follow my narrative. "Ich bin ein Berliner" is what Kennedy said while visiting Berlin in 1963 just after the Berlin wall was erected. The story reported in publications including the New York Times was that this phrase translates directly to "I am a jelly doughnut". While a jelly doughnut is called a Berliner, as we found out last week, it was reported that citizens of Berlin do not call themselves Berliners when in fact they do, according to Wikipedia and urbanlengends.com.

The kid never came back. Our next door neighbor kid claims that he knows the kid but that he's been forbidden to go to his house. The next door neighbor kid mowed for us on Friday, unevenly and sloppily, but a bargain at only $10. (The $8 I lost was for only the front and one side).

Your observations are always welcome here at Toast and Cereal, especially if they are inclined in this direction. I hadn't thought of this angle, but you're so right: the Cubs and Packers have a lot to teach about persistence, pride without hubris, and taking the long view. Given that, I wonder what our hometown teams represent - the Mariners and Seahawks (both expansion teams, I believe?), the Storm and the Sounders FC.

anyway, I just thought I'd chime in and point out that the teams represented are potentially crucial shapers of her future personality. The Cubs and the Packers. Cubs: perennial lovable underdogs, the ying to the Yankees yang. And the Packers: America's other team, the team owned by the city, the antithesis to the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones. Actively rooting for these teams can become part of a personal philosophy, a persona.
But I'm a cheesehead who's always had a soft spot for Cubs. So I'm partial. And I've apparently got nothing to do here at work. Hope to meet you sometime!

Maybe Viola should be in a commercial for MAC. "Take your MAC on a NAP". As for mowing, I mowed down by the river...all but the last 15' which is just mud. I went to put some grass seed down this morning only to find that the deer had been by during the night. Their hoofs really left an imprint in the mud. It was interesting to see where they roamed.
Your rice may have talked back to you but I missed dinner last night. Mom had book club & all I got was a few pieces of cheese and crackers. Yes, I did eat a big piece of strawberry/rhubarb pie with ice cream before bed.

That's funny about the Halston's (the people who's lawn I mowed). I distinctly remember them paying me after I was finished (and placing the money into my sweet Ocean Pacific wallet), but I also remember the mowing my money incident too. Must have been an out-of-the-ordinary circumstance.
